Synopsis:
Conflict erupts when the first woman appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court takes her seat on the bench in Ronald Neame's witty political comedy FIRST MONDAY IN OCTOBER. Newly appointed Justice Ruth Loomis' (Jill Clayburgh) staunch conservative views stand in sharp opposition to the other members of the Court--especially those of outspoken liberal Justice Dan Snow (Walter Matthau). So it isn't long before the rivals square off against each other in a series of cases involving censorship and big business, igniting an intense ideological showdown that yields an unexpected truce between the fiery opponents. Ruth Loomis has just made history -- she's the first female judge appointed to the Supreme Court. A woman's presence shakes things up on the bench, but it is Loomis's staunch conservative views that ruffle liberal Justice Dan Snow. Although the two magistrates clash over subjects such as pornography, they nonetheless find themselves attracted to each other. Will romance be sworn in? Or will Cupid be held in contempt of court? It's always a pleasure to see a movie that presents both sides of a complex issue (in this case, liberals vs. conservatives) in an even-handed and enjoyable way. The characterization of First Monday is superb, particularly the antagonism between Matthau and Clayburgh. I chuckled numerous times over the dialog. Example: after hearing that the chief justice had flowers sent to the new female Supreme Court justice, Matthau muttered, "How come you don't send ME flowers anymore, CJ"?
