The star of this animated 24-minute version of Mark Twain's The Prince and the Pauper is Mickey Mouse...and Mickey Mouse. The bare bones of Twain's mistaken-identity plotline are adhered to, with several delightful slapstick sidetrips along the way. Supporting Mr. Mouse are such Disney stalwarts as Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, and Black Pete (as the villain, natch.) The film is a delightful harkback to such Disney cartoons of yore as Brave Little Tailor (1938) and Mickey and the Beanstalk (1947), though there are plenty of contemporary references to keep a 1990s audience happy. This fresh, marvelously amusing adaptation of The Prince and the Pauper with Mickey Mouse has been released on laserdisc with a group of classic Disney cartoons. The 1991 Pauper has Mickey, Goofy, Donald Duck, and Pluto, and the weasels from Roger Rabbit to boot. The animation is quite pleasing and the gags are especially inventive, and the characterizations are also quite strong. The picture looks glossy and spotless.

There is a superbly employed stereo surround soundtrack, with a full-blown orchestral score, and the entire film is presented in CAV. Side two, which is in CLV, has quite a collection of Disney cartoon classics. The transfer on the amusing Willie the Operatic Whale (1946) looks very good, giving a boost to the cartoon's witty montage of performances given by the whale at the Met. The transfers on Peter and the Wolf (1946), Ferdinand the Bull (1938), the ugly ducklingish Lambert the Sheepish Lion (1952), and the Mickey Mouse symphonic lampoon, Symphony Hour (1942), are also fine. Peter and the Wolf (1946), was originally included in a 1946 feature called Make Mine Music, after originally being planned for the oft-delayed sequel to Fantasia. Featuring narration by Sterling Holloway, Peter & the Wolf adds Walt Disney's touch to Prokofiev's masterpiece, telling the story of the brave young boy who takes it upon himself to go out hunting for a dangerous wolf, while accompanied by a bird, a duck, and a cat. Rather than featuring dialogue, each character is voiced by a different musical instrument. This laserdisc also includes the 1935 animated classic, Music Land.
